Drone fishing has grown in popularity, offering an exciting and innovative new approach to fishing that is simple yet effective. Drone fishing may come across as an expensive investment, but the truth is, it doesnāt have to be.Ā
Thanks to more affordable, high-quality products like the Aeroo Pro, drone fishing is now within reach for just about anyone. In this guide, weāll take you through the gear you need - drone, rod, reel and line - to give you a better idea to improve your next fishing experience.Ā
Drone
Let's start with the obvious: you need a droneĀ
If youāre just getting into drone fishing or want to upgrade from your current set-up, the Aeroo Pro gives you everything you need to cast beyond the shores without breaking the bank. Itās beginner-friendly, built tough and features an automatic payload release system, with smart flight modes tailored for fishing purposes.Ā
We recommend the Aeroo Pro for obvious reasons⦠but it is important to note that no single drone is perfect for everyone. You want to look for a product that matches your individual needs and is tailored for your next fishing adventure!
Rod
When drone fishing, the rod plays two main roles:
- Hold the line above the waves
- Handle long retrievals and heavy loads.Ā
A 10ft beach rod with at least a 10kg line rating is a great all-rounder and is what we would recommend. While manufacturers like Oannes and G-Reaper make specialized rods for drone fishing, weāve tested everything from $30 Kmart Surf Combo to $500 pro rods - and the budget ones still get the job done.Ā
Pro Tip: Save your money for the reel and drone, especially if you are targeting smaller to mid-size species.Ā

Reel
There are two key features a reel MUST have for drone fishing
- Big line capacity (500m+)
- Strong drag (15kg+)
Ā
Whether you a someone who prefers a spinning or overhead reel, it needs to be smooth, tough and built for long fights. You will want plenty of line, and we have found that an 8000 series reel or above is suitable for drone fishing. This ensures enough braid line to cast, with extra length in case there is a fight on your hands. If you have the budget for it, electric reels are game-changers for pulling in rigs from 500m out.Ā
Tip: A reel with a rough or sticky action can make your drone fishing experience an unenjoyable one. Invest in a good one if you can.
Ā
Line
When it comes to selecting your line, braid is the gold standard. It is thin, strong, and allows you to fit more on the spool.Ā
We recommend:Ā
- 30lb braid for general fishing
- 50-80lb for sharks or big gameĀ
- Look for the lowest PE rating possible (thinner diameter).Ā
Monofilament and fluorocarbon have their uses, but they usually donāt offer enough spool capacity for dronefishing. We recommend a braided line for the best experience out on the water.Ā
Rigs
Whether you're running a snapper rig, shark rig, or simple bait dropper, the Aeroo Pro can handle it. Pair it with our recommended bait release, and youāre good to go.
